How To Determine If Your Patients Are Good Candidates For VRT

Posted by Monica Gallegos on May 25, 2016 1:30:00 PM

NovaVision's Vision Restoration Therapy (VRT) is designed to improve visual functions in patients with neurological visual field loss. The most common cause of neurological visual field loss is an ischemic stroke, in particular a stroke affecting the posterior cerebral artery (PCA), or a brain hemorrhage (hemorrhagic stroke).

However, even physicians are often not fully aware that visual field loss can be caused by a variety of   other conditions, and that VRT can be offered to patients as a rehabilitation therapy.

A number of conditions can lead to damage to the visual pathway or visual center in the brain, with the result being a treatable visual field defect for both eyes:

  • Strokes in general – ACA, ICA, MCA and vertebra-basilar strokes, in addition to PCA
  • Conditions which can lead to a hemorrhagic stroke, such as Cerebral Aneurysm or Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM)
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or closed head injury
  • A brain tumor (e.g. meningioma or astrocytoma) or an operation to remove or reduce a brain tumor
  • Other types of brain surgery
  • Encephalitis (fully recovered)

New Study on Post Stroke Vision Loss

Posted by Monica Gallegos on Jan 11, 2016 9:00:00 AM

A recent study is shining a new light on visual impairment after stroke. The study was carried out in the UK; nevertheless the findings are significant for both stroke survivors and medical professionals worldwide. Dr Fiona Rowe, Reader in Health Services Research at the University of Liverpool was determined to gather data that would scientifically support the view that post stroke vision loss is in fact a serious issue for many survivors which currently largely goes unaddressed, unlike other post-stroke rehabilitation.
